God’s Mercy vs. Our Narrow Limits

Scripture and Insight

GOD repented…But it displeased Jonah exceedingly, and he was angry.—Jonah 4:1

God showed great mercy to Nineveh, sparing them and recalling His judgment when they repented. But Jonah became angry at God’s compassion. He was displeased with the Lord’s generosity and grace. How often we, too, set limits on God’s love, being harsher and more judgmental than He is. We confine His boundless mercy within the narrow boundaries of our own opinions, failing to embrace His limitless compassion for all people.

Reflect and ask

Are there people or situations where you have been quick to judge, rather than extending grace and mercy?

Prayer

O Lord God, fill my heart with Your pity and compassion. May I not be harsh where You are forgiving, nor severe where You are merciful. Help me to rejoice in Your grace for all people, especially for those who have wandered far from You. Let me reflect the boundless compassion of Christ in my thoughts, words, and actions. For His sake, Amen.
