“For there is hope for a tree: If it is cut down, it will sprout again, and its new shoots will not fail. Its roots may grow old in the ground and its stump die in the soil, yet at the scent of water it will bud and put forth shoots like a plant.” — Job 14:7-9 (NIV)
Even when a tree appears lifeless—its roots aged and its stump withering in the ground—there is still hope. At the mere scent of water, the tree is revived, sending forth new shoots and bursting into life once again. This beautiful image of renewal is a reflection of the human soul. No matter how weary, defeated, or disheartened we may feel, the presence of the “water of life”—God’s grace and Spirit—has the power to quicken us into newness of life.
When God’s life-giving waters come near, those who are drooping in despair are revived, clothed once more in strength and beauty. In the same way, followers of Jesus are called to be like rivers of living water, bringing renewal and hope to others. Let us walk as bearers of this life-giving stream, bringing encouragement, restoration, and vitality to those around us, just as God restores us.
Reflect and act
Think about aspects of your life—relationships, goals, or personal well-being—that feel stagnant or defeated. Write them down. Consider inviting God’s presence or support into these areas. Reach out to others for help and support.
Prayer
My Father God, I affirm that my presence brings the life-giving water to others. I witness Your grace as I nurture new growth and bear fruit. May my life inspire and uplift those around me, even as I work to provide for myself. For Christ’s sake, I stand in faith. Amen.
